On Development: A New Design Pattern for the World Wide Web

May 14, 2008 – 10:39 pm
This is going to be a great post, mainly because the person who thought of it was Jeff Croft, a very smart, funny, decent human being. Since I am none of those things, I can't claim originality of the concept. I can also tell you that Jeff is lazy about blogging (or apathetic), and talked about this subject at Refresh Seattle in October and failed to blog about it. Since I felt the topic was fascinating and the insight great, I pestered stalked murdered and stole from Jeff until I got his slide presentation. The images in this article are all his. That being said, since I'm transitioning from a front-end developer to a backend developer-hybrid T1000, it is presented in my voice as well as with my thoughts. My sincerest apologies. This is the concept: The traditional model of application development and front-end development are separated. The design pattern used for ...

Theme Change

I've changed the theme of my site. It's a bit more unique, but still not the finished design. That should be up by the end of the month. It's also still on Wordpress. I just downloaded it. Who needs client-based designers when you can make a site look good with just a download!

These all have measurable results, design does not. It needs an endpoint and requirements, but it is never measurable. If you're in the business of creating mockups, which I suggest you do ONLY after you have content to put in it, then you may be pleased to know that Photoshop always makes things look better then they do on Firefox; I'll give you Safari, and we'll compromise on Windows Vista: IE8. Which leads to a whole 'nother post 'bout designing on Macs (certainly not the lowest common denominator visually) with its lovely font rendering and interface... but that, ...

A lot of web designers have blogs and refrain from cussing. They dazzle you with their fancy CSS grid layouts, semantic (X)HTML and useful knowledge. They display all the courtesy of professionalism, and the fantasy of discourse in the field of design. This, is another voice added: at times very bitter, sometimes angry, but ALWAYS takes you out to dinner beforehand. I hope you enjoy my custom design for this blog. I'm distributing it for free under the name "Wordpress Default". It is the best format, I find, for presenting your material to your reader (Hi Mom!) and to yourself as quickly as possible. It is probably not the initial design you had in mind when you download "Wordpress Default", but it gets the blog rolling. It is content which creates kings (or is king or begets kings) after all, and good design focuses around enhancing the might of the crown. So ...
